This winter Jankov will show her latest documentary series “Scar,” at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Typically for Alanna, the show focuses on capturing underrepresented, hidden, overlooked, even sometimes disturbing or taboo aspects of contemporary life in Charlottetown. In this case, subjects bare physical scars, which range from wounds caused by accidents or surgeries to deliberate skin alterations like tattoos and pie…rcings. Each of 21 photographs is also a conventional portrait, a posed picture focusing on a subject’s face. Like much documentary photography, Jankov’s work is about “telling the truth” about its subjects. But Jankov also allows subjects to tell the truth in their own way, and by posing in the manner of a portrait, to reveal themselves while simultaneously having control over the way their stories, reflected in the marks on their skin, are told. It is if our scars are both who we are and separate from us at the same time.

Scar: Alanna Jankov, curated by Pan Wendt, opens January 8th and runs until March 13th.

Hope to see you at the opening on January 8, 2011 at 7:00 pm

Photographer Alanna Jankov, who grew up on Caribou Island, calls herself “The Official Photographer of Your Life.” She’s put this motto to practice in a successful business specializing in portraits.
“A key part of being a portrait photographer is interaction with customers, and Alanna is a real pro when it comes to getting her subjects to relax, tell stories, express what they want from a shoot, and get comfortable posing in front of the camera,” says Confederation Centre Art Gallery curator Pan Wendt.
“She is genuinely curious about the people who live in the city she calls home. And this curiosity is reflected in her numerous documentary projects.”
This winter, Jankov will show her latest documentary series Scar at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery. Typical for Jankov, the show focuses on capturing underrepresented, hidden, overlooked, even sometimes disturbing or taboo aspects of contemporary life. Two of her subjects, “Richard” and “Leif”, are from Pictou.
Her subjects bare physical scars, which range from wounds caused by accidents or surgeries to deliberate skin alterations like tattoos and piercings. Each of the 21 photographs is also a conventional portrait, a posed picture focusing on a subject’s face.
Like much documentary photography, Jankov’s work is about telling the truth about its subjects. But she also allows her subjects to tell the truth in their own way, and by posing, to reveal themselves while simultaneously having control over the way their stories, reflected in the marks on their skin, are told.
“It is if our scars are both who we are and separate from us at the same time,” Wendt says.
Scar: Alanna Jankov, curated by Pan Wendt, opens January 8 and runs until March 13 at the Confederation Centre Art Gallery.
